“Raising the Next Generation Again”

Blog written by Mark Morris, Retired Pastor, Author

When a grandparent is faced with a harsh reality of having their grandchildren become the next set of children they must raise, it brings a lot of struggles and obstacles.

Raising your grandchildren can be very meaningful, but it will also bring some very unique challenges. Anytime we are faced with being placed into an unexpected parenting role, there are unforeseen challenges and struggles.

Today I would like to look at three very common struggles every grandparent who is raising their grandchildren face.

Financial Strain: Many grandparents are living on Social Security, therefore they are on a fixed income. The struggles of having to add one-two or three possible more mouths to feed at the table can put many grandparents into a financial strain. Not only food, but clothing, which they grow out of rapidly, school supplies, as well as regular healthcare and personal hygiene items can place a financial strain and burden on grandparents. The added cost to your budget will create financial burdens.

Physical and Emotional Strain: We have to remember we are not as young as we once were, and parenting young children requires a lot of energy. Not only energy, but it takes a lot of adaptability as well as patience. Playing baseball in the backyard and teaching children how to ride a bicycle can be physically exhausting. Not only is the physical part straining, but there are often emotional stresses associated with the circumstances. Grandparents who are put in the situation are often dealing with their children, having problems such as addiction and incarceration, or even as it was in our case, the loss of our child. All of these things can take an emotional toll. All of these circumstances can be heartbreaking and draining.

Generational and Parenting Gaps It is amazing how much changes from one generation to the next – technology, school expectations, even the way we approach discipline and social issues. It can be a struggle for grandparents to relate to the modern challenges like social media and mental health awareness. So much has changed with new educational systems, which, if we are not careful can create strain and confusion.

Raising grandchildren can be stressful and there are many struggles associated with it. However, the Lord does provide grace, and the church should provide support. If you are raising your grandchildren due to the circumstances beyond your control, do not allow the struggles to create resentment and anger, but be thankful that God has given you the resources and the strength to do this.
